American Psycho | 2000 | dir. Mary Harron
"This confession has meant nothing."
It is sometimes difficult to remember that this bizarre psychological thriller (or pitch black comedy, depending on your mood), based on accused misogynist Bret Easton Ellis’ controversial novel, is directed by a women simply because the film is so dark with a tone that is constantly troubling, but that is the same aspect of the film that works so perfectly because like Patrick Bateman (my personal favorite Christian Bale performance), who really is just doing as much horrific stuff as he possibly can (or is he?) without full comprehension of any of it, none of us viewers completely understand what exactly is going on or how to react to the situations either, making it difficult to get Harron’s achievement out of your head.
